Aces Grab Victory Over Sundowns

ABSA Premiership

Result: Mpumalanga Black Aces 1-0 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 4 December 2013

Venue: Mbombela Stadium

Mpumalanga Black Aces beat Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at the Mbombela Stadium in an ABSA Premiership match on Wednesday night, with the only goal of the game coming from Zambian Clifford Mulenga.

The loss was just Sundowns' second of the season, and once again it was to one of the teams promoted to the PSL this season, after their loss earlier this season to Polokwane City.

The win for Black Aces was just their second home win against Sundowns in a quarter of a century, with their last home win against the Brazilians in the league coming in 1988.

While Black Aces' goal came from Mulenga, the victory came through a strong defensive effort from Clive Barker's team, with Mbulelo Mabizela and goalkeeper Bafana Nhlapo standing out.

Omar Hendricks had an attempt in the fourth minute, but his header from Ofentse Nato's free kick went over the goal.

A minute later Cuthbert Malajila had a chance on the other end of the field, but Bafana Nhlapo was able to save.

Aces grabbed the lead on the counter attack in the tenth minute as Clifford Mulenga ran clear onto a pass from Thabo Qalinge, beat the off-side trap, and scored past fellow Zambian Kennedy Mweene to make it 1-0.

A minute later Mulenga was back in the action, but his shot from the left hit the post and Mweene was able to deflect it out for a corner.

In the 13th minute Katlego Mashego had a chance to equalize when he was played in by Malajila, but the ball was slightly behind him, and he was unable to shoot immediately with an open net in front of him, and by the time he did, Mbulelo Mabizela made a good block to stop his shot.

Mashego tried a shot from a tight angle in the 18th minute as the rain started to come down, but Nhlapo got down well to deflect it out for a corner.

On the half hour mark Alje Schut came close to heading in Teko Modise's free kick, but Mabizela made a crucial interception and headed it out for a corner.

In the 37th minute Modise played in Tebogo Langerman who tried a shot from the edge of the area, but Nhlapo made a good save and deflected it out for a corner.

Two minutes later Rashid Sumaila tried a shot from the right of goal and once again Nhlapo was able to make a save.

In the 40th minute Mashego had a chance from a free kick, but it took a deflection off the wall and went out for a corner.

From the resulting corner Sundowns went close through Schut, but the ball bounced just wide of the post, and at half-time Aces held onto their 1-0 lead.

In the 59th minute Modise sent in a great long shot from forty yards out, but Nhlapo made a good diving save and parried well to keep it out.

Two minutes later Langerman sent in a dangerous cross, but once again Mabizela made a good interception and slid in and knocked it out over his goal for a corner.

In the 68th minute Bryce Moon sent in a good cross but an unmarked Langerman couldn't control the ball, and Nhlapo rushed off his line to gather the ball.

In the 81st minute Qalinge tried a long range effort from outside the box, but it went straight to Mweene.

Two minutes later Mashego tried again from a set piece, but once again he couldn't get it past the wall.

In the dying minutes Malajila had a chance from a corner, but his header went over the goal.
