Aces And Santos In Stalemate

PSL Promotion/Relegation Play-Off

Result: Aces 1-1 Santos

Date: 29 June 2013

Venue: Themba Senamela Stadium

Mpumalanga Black Aces struck in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw with Santos in their final PSL Promotion/Relegation clash on Saturday afternoon but had already secured promotion ahead of the encounter.

The game got off to an extremely slow start as neither side managed to carve out solid opportunities to take the lead.

Santos could have hit the front but a header from inside the area was cleared off the line by Aces while Lee Langerveldt was alert at the other end to pick up a drilled cross into the six-yard area.

Aces attacker Dennis Masina would have been hoping to have done better with his chance in the 24th minute when he was picked out by a cross from Setjhaba Mmuso but his header was well over.

In the 32nd minute the hosts had arguably the best chance of the half with Houston Hills being slipped in behind the defence and he powered a low cross to the far post where Tshidiso Mosikidi was denied a tap in by a brilliant tackle from Santos.

The People's Team had a great chance two minutes after the break but Vuyisile Wana failed to find the back of the net after latching on the ball free at the far post.

The game was still up for grabs and Hills flashed a shot over the crossbar in the 62nd minute while Wana failed to beat Bafana Nhlapo in a one-on-one situation in the 76th minute.

Aces came within inches of breaking the deadlock soon after but substitute Phetolo Lebepe saw his shot pushed onto the woodwork.

Their failure to use their chances would be punished straight at the other end though as Wana whipped a perfect low cross to the fee of Tebogo Masaole who side-footed home

Aces substitute Phetolo Sekome would ensure that the points were shared though when he poked the ball home, much to the embarrassment of Langeveldt who should have done better.

The result did not matter much though as Aces had already booked their place in the Premier Soccer League next season.
