Polokwane Pick Up Narrow Win

Absa Premiership: University of Pretoria 0-1 Polokwane City

Date: 9 August 2014

Venue: Tuks Stadium

Polokwane City earned a narrow 1-0 win over hosts University of Pretoria in their first Absa Premiership game of the season at the Tuks Stadium on Saturday.

The University of Pretoria started off the stronger of the two sides with Vuyisile Ntombayithethi having a strike at goal with just 60 seconds played, but his effort was well blocked by Rise and Shine goalkeeper Dino Visser.

Visser was then called into action again a few minutes later, this time he was on hand to block a Geoffrey Massa effort.

Mothusi Gopane had the first shot at goal through Mothusi Gopane for the visitors but AmaTuks keeper Washington Arubi made a comfortable save with six minutes on the clock.

Visser was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first-half and he once again denied AmaTuks in the 27th minute saving well from Thabo Mnyamane’s shot at goal.

Rise and Shine then broke the deadlock against the run of play with Puleng Tlolane slotting the ball past Arubi after being played in by Sipho Genbuna, following a good build-up in play, with just over a half an hour played, 1-0 to Polokwane City.

It was all one-way traffic in the second-half with Steve Barker’s men throwing everything forward in search of an equaliser.

Second-half substitute Khethukuthula Zwane came close to drawing the home side level with just over an hour played but his effort was blocked Vukile Mngqibisa.

City held on and picked up their first win of the new season with a three pointer at Tuks Stadium.

This is how they started:

P City XI: Visser, Molekwane, Ngwepe, Mngqibisa, Tshilo, Nzimande, Gopane, Alexander, Mhlongo, Genbuna, Tlolane
