Absa Premiership
Full Time: University of Pretoria 2-1 Moroka Swallows
Date: 8 April 2014
Venue: Tuks Stadium
Grant Kekana scored the winning goal as the University of Pretoria came from a goal down to beat Moroka Swallows 2-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Tuks Stadium on Tuesday night.
The result sees Tuks go above Swallows on the league table into 11th place on 31 points while the Birds dropped to 12th on the table with 30 points.
It was a slow start to the game with both side’s struggling to keep hold of the ball early on.
A lot of the play was congested in the middle of the park as both teams wasted their time on the ball with wayward passing.
Consequently, chances on goal were few and far between.
The first effort on goal only came in the 16th minute as Swallows’ Vuyisile Wana flashed a 30-yard effort narrowly wide of the target.
Two minutes later Tuks had their first chance in front of goal when Grant Kekana headed a corner-kick back into the danger area where he found an unmarked Tebogo Monyai, but he headed over under no pressure from eight-yards out.
In the 24th minute Giorgi Nergadze met a corner-kick, but the Swallows man saw his header from 12-yards out well-saved by the keeper.
Ten minutes later the Dube Birds took the lead after Roger da Costa powerfully headed home a Lefa Tsutsulupa corner-kick, 1-0.
Tuks, though, finished the half the stronger of the two sides and managed to draw level three minutes before the break when Geoffrey Massa made the most of some sloppy defending to score with a six-yard bicycle-kick, 1-1.
The start of the second half saw Swallows with more ball possession, but they lacked imagination in the final third and struggled to create goal scoring chances.
Siyabonga Nomvethe almost gave the Birds the lead in the 65th minute when he met a left-wing free-kick with a cheeky back-heel, but the keeper was well-placed to save his six-yard effort.
Eight minutes later Tuks took the lead against the run of play when Kekana snuck in front of Negradze to head home a corner-kick from six-yards out, 2-1.
Swallows tried to get back into the match, but were unable to do so as Tuks picked up all three points.
