SuperSport Overtake Sundowns Despite Dropping Points

Absa Premiership

Result: SuperSport United 1-1 Stellenbosch

Date: 30 November 2019

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

SuperSport United leapfrogged Mamelodi Sundowns into second spot, despite dropping points against Stellenbosch on Saturday evening.

Matsatsantsa coach Kaitano Tembo only one change from their win over Maritzburg United, as Teboho Mokoena took the place of Jamie Webber who missed out through suspension. Meanwhile, Steve Barker made wholesale changes to the side that was walloped by Kaizer Chiefs as the likes of Ryan Moon, Nyiko Mobbie and Mpho Matsi came back to boost the team.

Kaitano Tembo's troops almost had an early goal with a dipping free-kick from Mokoena that was brilliantly kept out by goalkeeper Boy de Jong before Kudakwashe Mahachi cracked the outside of the post in the 20th minute with a powerful strike from just outside the box.

United had another great chance to break the deadlock just after the half-hour mark after Sipho Mbule picked out Thamsanqa Gabuza at the back post with a cross inside the box but the former Orlando Pirates strike could not capitalise.

Stellies were hardly threatening going forward but they had some breathing space in defence in the latter phase of the first stanza as SuperSport ran out of steam and the first stanza ended without goals as a result.

Matsatsantsa had a great start to the second stanza as Mahachi broke the deadlock two minutes from the break with a stunning low volley from outside the box that beat de Jong.

However, the visitors weren't behind for too long as they found the equaliser on the hour-mark thanks to Waseem Isaacs, who smashed home a low drive for his fifth league goal of the eas

Teenager Oswin Appollis was unlucky not to restore the lead for United a few minutes after coming on for Aubrey Modiba with 14 minutes remaining after his cracking left footed strike hit the upright.

Appollis' effort proved to be the final offering from either side as the spoils were on the evening, as SuperSport move up to second spot.
