Late Equaliser Denies Matsatsantsa Win
Absa Premiership Report: SuperSport United v Polokwane City 23 January 2018
Result: SuperSport United 1-1 Polokwane City
Date: 23 January 2018
Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium
A last-minute equaliser from Polokwane City saw them steal a point in a 1-1 draw with SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday night.
The first chance of the game came in the 10th minute, when Puleng Tlolane played Rodney Ramagalela in behind the Matsatsantsa defence. Reyaad Pieterse was quick off his line and closed down the angle well enough to save the top league goalscorer’s effort.
Bernard Molekwa was then forced into a 16th minute substitution by an injury to Rendani Ndou, who had been caught by a crunching Morgan Gould challenge.
Three minutes later, George Chigova made a fine save to deny Aubrey Modiba from close range. Modiba had been set up by a ball across goal from Thuso Phala, who had initiated the attack with an interception. However, he took too long to pull the trigger after receiving Phala’s pass and couldn’t fire past the keeper when he finally shot.
Chigova turned villain when he was beaten at his near post in the 31st minute. Gould met a delivery from a Dean Furman free-kick and headed in off the woodwork to break the deadlock, punishing the keeper for not coming out and collecting the cross.
10 minutes later, Chigova redeemed himself somewhat, blocking Kingston Nkhatha’s low shot at the near post before keeping out his follow-up effort.
Rise and Shine made their second change in the 66th minute as Vusimuzi Mngomezulu came on to replace Edgar Manaka.
It took until the 84th minute for SuperSport to make their first substitution. Nkhatha was the man to make way, with Darren Smith coming on. Four minutes later, Denwin Farmer replaced Modiba.
There was not much in the way of noteworthy second half action, with both keepers able to breathe far more easily than in the first 45 minutes.
However, deep into stoppage time, Tlolane’s strike took a wicked deflection off Clayton Daniels and looped into the net to deny Matsatsantsa what would have been a vital win.
Here's how they line up:
