Sundowns Snatch Victory In Tshwane Derby
Result: SuperSport United 0-1 Mamelodi Sundowns
Date: 19 April 2017
Venue: Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium
Mamelodi Sundowns defeated SuperSport United 1-0 in their Absa Premiership encounter at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The visitors got off to the brighter start and almost took the lead within the first minute after some lovely interplay saw Percy Tau find Khama Billiat on the edge of the area, but the forward flashed his effort wide of the target.
SuperSport hardly threatened in the opening ten minutes of the Tshwane Derby as they looked to contain the attacking-threat of Sundowns as opposed to playing their own game.
Jeremy Brockie's enticing cross in the 12th minute almost evaded defender Ricardo Nascimento after being put under a great deal of pressure by Kingston Nkhatha but the onrushing Denis Onyango kept his side at bay.
Sundowns defender Motjeka Madisha did well to stop Nkhatha from scoring in the 34th minute when Ronwen Williams' pin-point distribution found the Zimbabwean in acres of space, but Madisha's great anticipation allowed the scoreline to remain goalless.
Onyango made a brilliant save to deny Clayton Daniels in the 41st minute after the defender did well to shake-off the attention of his marker from a throw-in, before unleashing a powerful effort which Onyango palmed over.
The score remained goalless as the sides entered the halftime break.
Sundowns came out guns blazing in the second-half and almost broke the deadlock in the 47th minute when a good passage of play saw Tau find some space on the left, but the forward could not muster his way past a crowded SuperSport box.
Both sides took steps in search of the opener as the home side introduced Mandla Masango and Thuso Phala for Aubrey Modiba and Kingston Nkhatha respectively, whilst Sundowns brought on veteran midfielder Teko Modise in place of Mzikayise Mashaba.
Sundowns came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the 71st minute when Kekana's long-range effort went inches wide of Williams' goalframe.
The visitors were rewarded for their continious attacking efforts when Kekana's header evaded Williams to give Sundowns a 1-0 lead in the 82nd minute, following a fine free-kick from Modise.
SuperSport threw numbers in search of the equaliser, but Sundowns managed to withstand their late-surge to record maximum points to go within touching distance of the log-leaders.
