Modiba Goal Ensures SuperSport Safety
Absa Premiership Report: SuperSport United v Baroka FC, 12 May 2018
Full Time: SuperSport United 1-0 Baroka FC
Date: 12 May 2018
Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium
A goal from Aubrey Modiba ensured SuperSport United maintained their Absa Premiership status after beating Baroka FC 1-0 in their final of the season at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
The opening 20 minutes was a rather scrappy affair, with both teams unable to hold onto the ball long enough to create any decent scoring opportunities.
In the 22nd minute, the game saw its first shot on goal when SuperSport’s Modiba flashed an effort from the edge of the box inches wide of the target.
Three minutes later, the home side were afforded a golden chance to open the scoring when Matome Kgoetyane fouled Mogakolodi Ngele inside the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
Modiba made no mistake with a clinical strike to give SuperSport the lead from 12 yards, 1-0.
Evans Rusike should have doubled the home side’s lead in the 40th minute when he broke into the box from the left, but he fired into the side-netting from close range with just the keeper to beat.
Ten minutes into the second half, Reneilwe Letsholonyane came close to scoring for the home side, but his thunderous shot from just outside the box skimmed the wrong side of the woodwork.
Baroka really struggled to find their footing in the game as SuperSport looked comfortable to sit back and hold onto the ball.
Baroka’s only significant effort of the half came in the 82nd minute when Talent Chawaphiwa created space for himself on the edge of the box, but his powerful shot went inches wide.
In the end, SuperSport held on for a 1-0 win, which sees them guarantee themselves a spot in the top flight season.
Despite the loss, Baroka will still be in the Absa Premiership next season after Ajax Cape Town went down 2-1 to Kaizer Chiefs to finish in the playoff spot.
