Grobler Goal Downs Bucs

Absa Premiership

Full Time: SuperSport United 1-0 Orlando Pirates

Date: 5 April 2014

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

A single goal from Bradley Grobler handed SuperSport United a slender 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The opening 45 minutes saw the Buccaneers with more of the ball, but they struggled to break down the United defence and were restricted to shooting from long range.

The home side, on the other hand, saw very little of the ball, but created the best chances in front of goal.

The first real shot on goal came in the 15th minute as Happy Jele blazed a 30-yard thunderbolt just over the crossbar.

Six minutes later United had their first opportunity in front of goal and it was probably the best scoring chance of the half as Thuso Phala beat one defender before seeing his 14-yard shot superbly saved by Senzo Meyiwa.

In the 22nd minute Kermit Erasmus broke through the heart of the United defence, but with just the keeper to beat a last ditch tackle from Thato Mokeke robbed him of the ball.

A minute later Erasmus did get a shot on goal from the edge of the box, but he saw his effort well-saved by the keeper.

Pirates finished the half the stronger of the two sides as Jele fired a low pile-driver from 24-yards out inches wide of the left-hand post in the 38th minute.

Three minutes later Tlou Segolela struck the outside of the post from an acute angle on left 12-yards out from goal.

The half ended 0-0.

United started the better of the two sides in the second stanza as Phala broke down the left flank in the 54th minute, but he saw his low cross touched centimeters wide by Bradley Grobler from six-yards out.

Ten minutes later Meyiwa had to be at his best when Innocent Mkhabela beat two defenders on the edge of the box before firing a shot goalwards. The Pirates keeper, though, flung himself across his goal to tip the shot around the post.

In the 76th minute United made their second half pressure pay as Phala broke down the left flank and saw his low cross turned home by Grobler from only a couple of yards out, 1-0.

Pirates tried to find their way back into the game, but the United defence held firm as they picked up three points that saw them go level on points in the league with the Buccaneers.
