Polokwane Sink Downs In Five-Goal Thriller
Absa Premiership Report: Polokwane City v Mamelodi Sundowns 06 January 2018
Result: Polokwane City 3-2 Mamelodi Sundowns
Date: 06 January 2018
Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium
Polokwane City claimed the spoils in a five-goal thriller, as they defeated Absa Premier League leaders Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Lebese sent the Brazilians into an early lead in the third minute, by converting a low cross from Hlompho Kekana with a well struck shot from the centre of the box, 0-1.
Percy Tau could have doubled Masandawana's lead in the 12th minute, after being offered space in the box to unleash a low shot but, George Chigova stood firm to make a save.
Pitso Mosimane's charges were flowing after 20 minutes and threatened to extend the lead with slick passing and good movement off the ball.
Rise and Shine could not cope after half-an-hour, as they were cut open with ease in the possession turn over and looked very disjointed defensively.
The home side controlled the match in the last five minutes and showed their experience by knocking the ball around as they headed into the dressing room with a 1-0 lead.
The Brazilians were forced into making two substitutions at the beginning of the second half, as Lebese picked up a knee injury and was replaced by Anthony Laffor, while Anele Ngcongca also had a knock and had to be replaced by Siyanda Zwane.
Just before the hour mark Sammy Seabi brought parity for Rise and Shine, with a fine header at the near post following a great free-kick from Jabulani Maluleke from the edge of the box, 1-1.
Walter Musona made it 2-1 a minute later, after Masandawana were caught flat-footed at the back with Oupa Manyisa making an error that allowed the Zimbabwean striker to slot past Denis Onyango inside the box.
Manyisa made amends six minutes later after being sent through on goal by Tau and the midfielder sent a fine finish past Chigova from close range.
With 10 minutes remaining, Rodney Ramagalela made it 3-2 with a thumping low diagonal shot, after being sent through on the right side of the box by Maluleke.
Mosimane brought on Yannick Zakri in place of Kekana, but it was too late for the Ivorian striker to make an impact as Rise and Shine held on for the win.
