Dikwena Sink Polokwane To Boost Survival Bid

Absa Premiership

Result: Platinum Stars 2-0 Polokwane City

Date: 07 April 2018

Venue: Royal Bafokeng Stadium

Platinum Stars gave their Absa Premiership survival hopes a major boost after defeating Polokwane City 2-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Riyaad Nororien had a chance to open the scoring for Dikwena in the 10th minute with a free-kick from the edge of the box but he guided his effort over the bar.

Charles Baloyi came close to breaking the deadlock for Roger De Sa’s troops in the 22nd minute with a  left-footed strike from just outside the box but City goalkeeper George Chigova was equal to the task.

The two sides could not keep possession and lost the ball too cheaply as the first stanza ended goalless.

Seven minutes into the second half, Ayanda Gcaba should have found the breakthrough for Dikwena with a free header inside the box but he failed to hit the target.

Stars had penalty appeals on the hour-mark after City defender Thapelo Tshilo appeared to handled the ball as he was sliding for a tackle inside the box but the referee was not convinced.

Bonginkosi Ntuli broke the deadlock for Dikwena 15 minutes before time with a header inside the box following a free-kick from Gerald Phiri.

Ntuli almost sealed the match for the hosts in the last minute of regulation time Chigova produced a good save to deny the striker.

However, Phiri did seal the match in stoppage time to make it 2-0 as Dikwena moved to within three points of Ajax Cape Town.
