Teams: Platinum Stars 3-0 Ajax Cape Town
Date: 10 May 2014
Venue: Royal Bafoken Stadium
An inspired performance from Platinum Stars in their last Absa Premiership match of the season saw them sneak into the top eight after beating Ajax Cape Town 3-0 at the Royal Bafokeng on Saturday afternoon.
With Stars knowing they had to get all three points in order to stand any chance of a top eight finish they threw men forward in attack from the word go.
The home side made their pressure tell in the 17th minute when Mogakolodi Ngele found the back of the net with an expert finish, 1-0.
Stars then doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Robert Ng'ambi turned a Mduduzi Nyanda pass homes to make it 2-0 at the break.
The start of the second half saw Ajax trying to find their way back into the game and they came close in the 59th minute when a long range shot from Cecil Lolo was brilliantly save by Siyabonga Mpontshane.
Mduduzi Nyanda then put the result beyond doubt for Platinum Stars with his side’s third goal in the 77th minute when his 24-yard free-kick rattled the back of the net, 3-0.
Ajax put up very little fight in the final ten minutes as Stars picked up all three points which sees them finish eighth on the table after AmaZulu lost to Kaizer Chiefs.
Ajax, on the other hand, finished the season in a disappointing 12th place.
