Obada Goal Downs Stars

Absa Premiership

Full Time:  Platinum Stars 0-1 Moroka Swallows

Date: 1 April 2014

Venue: Royal Bafokeng Stadium

A single goal from Felix Obada handed Moroka Swallows only their second win in 11 Absa Premiership matches when they beat Platinum Stars 1-0 in a league match at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Tuesday night.

The result sees Swallows up to tenth place on the table with 30 points from 24 games, three points adrift of ninth place Bloemfontein Celtic.

Platinum Stars remain in fifth place despite the loss, two points adrift of fourth placed Orlando Pirates.

The opening 45 minutes was a half largely controlled by the home side, but Swallows did have a couple of decent efforts on goal.

The first real opening came in the 10th minute for Platinum Stars when Mduduzi Nyanda saw his effort from the edge of the box well-saved by the keeper.

Greg Etafia was called into action again two minutes later, this time producing an acrobatic save to deny Mogakolodi Ngele from long range.

In the 15th minute Ngele tried his luck again from distance, but saw his shot sail inches wide of the right-hand post.

Swallows’ first real shot on goal came in the 23rd minute when Felix Obada flashed an effort wide from roughly 18-yards out.

Five minutes later Siyabonga Nomvethe cut in from the right flank and curled a 16-yard effort inches wide of the post

Platinum Stars had the last say of the half when Siphelele Mthembu headed a Siphiwe Sithole cross narrowly over the crossbar five minutes before the break.

The half ended 0-0.

The start of the second 45 saw Swallows start very positively as Obada shot inches wide of the target two minutes after the break.

Obada then grabbed the opening goal in the 54th minute with an expert left-foot finish, 1-0

The Birds did not ease up after that and came close to doubling their lead in the 67th minute when Nomvethe’s shot from the edge of the box skimmed the wrong side of the post.

Platinum Stars never really offered much in attack in the second half as Swallows hung on for a much needed win.
