Orlando Pirates were left frustrated after they dropped points in a goalless draw with Maritzburg United in the Absa Premiership on Saturday night.
Justin Shonga came close to grabbing the lead for Bucs in the 11th minute after going through on goal, but his low strike was brilliantly parried away by United goalkeeper Richard Ofori.
Fortune Makaringe had an opportunity to give the Team of Choice the lead two minutes later with a good strike after lurking on the far side of the box but Pirates shot-stopper Siyabonga Mpontshane made an equally good save.
Milutin Sredojevic’s charges were finding gaps in their combination play going forward, but they were only let down by their finishing.
Andrea Fileccia almost broke the deadlock for United on the half-hour mark with a long range strike that took a huge deflection and almost dipped under the top of the crossbar.
Fileccia then missed a sitter for the visitors from point-blank range eight minutes before the break after he unable to connect with a cross just a few yards away from the goal-line and somehow he struck over the bar.
Both sides played at a good tempo in the remaining stages of the half but they ultimately went into the break scoreless.
The pace of the game struggled to pick up in the opening stages of the second half, with both sides preferring to build slowly from the back.
Augustine Mulenga almost broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 68th minute with a strike at the near post that ruffled the side-netting as the Buccaneers upped the tempo.
Ofori came to Maritzburg's rescue in the 74th minute as he denied denied Bucs the breakthrough with a great save at the near post after a brilliant free-kick from Vincent Pule.
Moments later, Deolin Mekoa almost snatched the lead for the Team of Choice with a long range strike that crashed the outside top corner of the crossbar.
Rushine De Reuck had a glorious chance to snatch a dramatic winner in the last minute for United but he fired straight at Mpontshane as the two sides shared the spoils in the end.
