Pirates Survive CTC Onslaught

Absa Premiership

Result: Orlando Pirates 0-0 Cape Town City

Date: 20 September 2016

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City played out a goalless draw in their Absa Premiership clash on Tuesday night.

The Buccaneers were dealt a blow early in the clash when Gift Motupa picked up an injury, forcing coach Muhsin Ertugral to bring on Bernard Morrison in his place in the eighth minute.

Muhsin Ertugral's charges struggled to stamp their authority on the encounter, having given up possession on numerous occasions.

Cape Town City created more chances than their hosts in the first 25 minutes as Lebogang Manyama and Given Mashikinya threatened to score after positive build-up play.

The first real shot on target came at the other end of the pitch where Riyaad Norodien stung Shu-Aib Walters' hands with a low drive in the 40th minute.

The Mother City outfit started the second half brightly, creating a flurry of chances, the first of which fell for Judas Moseamedi whose effort lacked conviction and was comfortably saved.

Shortly thereafter Manyama unleashed a shot that was again well saved by Mhlongo, but the follow-up was fired wide.

Ngoma kept Mhlongo busy once again when his shot was deflected on target, but the goalkeeper reacted well to make the stop nonetheless.

Yet another opportunity fell for the travelers in the 71st minute when Matthew Sim pounced on the loose ball, but he could only fire it wide of the target.

Pirates created a rare chance for themselves in the 79th minute. Tendai Ndoro beat one defender on his way towards the City box, and shot wide, instead of looking to pass to a teammate on his left.

Manyama was on target again for Eric Tinkler's men in the 88th minute when he curved a free kick towards Mhlongo's bottom corner, but the gloveman made the save and the sides played out to a goalless draw.

Here's how they lined up:

Pirates: 16. Mhlongo, 33. Chabalala, 4. Jele, 5. Makola, 8. Matlaba, 45. Mobara, 20. Manyisa, 38. Motupa, 7. Ndoro, 31. Norodien, 18. Sarr

Cape Town: 31. Walters, 4. Kobola, 6. Mokeke, 27. Gumede, 6. Seedat, 17. Mashikinya, 20. Moseamedi, 23. Matsi, 10. Jayiya, 21. Manyama, 11. Ngoma
