Full Time: Moroka Swallows 0-1 Ajax Cape Town
Date: 4 April 2014
Venue: Dobsonville Stadium
It was heartache for Zeca Marques’ side when a goal from Lance Davids in the 94th minute of the match saw Ajax Cape Town beat Moroka Swallows 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Dobsonville Stadium on Friday night.
It was a slow start to the game by both teams as neither could keep possession long enough to create an opening on goal.
Swallows had the first shot on goal in the 11th minute as captain Lefa Tsutsulupa flashed a long range effort narrowly wide of the target.
Ajax’s first attempt came three minutes later, also from distance, but much like Tsutsulupa, Keagan Dolly fired wide of the goal.
The game fell into a bit of a lull after that with the next decent effort on goal only arriving on the half hour mark when Toriq Losper met a left wing cross from Eleazar Rodgers, but the Ajax man headed inches wide under no pressure.
The Birds finished the half the stronger of the two teams and came close to the opening goal in the 37th minute when Felix Obada headed a right wing cross over the crossbar from ten-yards out.
Three minutes later a piece of individual skill from Obada on the edge of the box saw him beat the defender before his shot from an acute angle 14-yards out was brilliantly saved by the keeper.
Obada was in the thick of the action again in the 43rd minute when he saw his 25-yard volley purposefully deflected centimeters wide by Siyabonga Nomvethe from six-yards out.
The half ended 0-0.
Swallows had the first attempt of the second half after a 30-yard pile-driver from Asavela Mbekile skimmed the wrong side of the post in the 52nd minute.
Four minutes later Rodgers attacked down the right for Ajax and saw his low cross from the right touched into the side netting by Grandwald Scott from an acute angle only a couple of yards out.
Both teams struggled in attack after that and neither created any significant chances in front until the final seconds of the match when Lance Davids stole the three points with a timid 30-yard free-kick that fooled Greg Etafia and found the back of the net, 1-0.
The result sees Ajax jump above Swallows on the league table into tenth place on 31 points. The Birds are in 11th place with 30 points.
