Phala Leads SuperSport To First Win

Absa Premiership

Result: Maritzburg United 0-1 SuperSport United

Date: 21 September 2016

Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium

Thuso Phala scored the only goal of the game to hand SuperSport United a narrow 1-0 win over Maritzburg United.

Stuart Baxter's charges controlled the possession in the opening stages, with Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Dove Wome pulling the strings in the middle of the park.

Although, Maritzburg should have opened the scoring inside the opening 10 minutes through Evans Rusike, who dragged his effort wide of the upright with only Ronwen Williams to beat.

All the chances were falling to the home side but they were let down by some poor finishing, as Rusike and Abia Nale missed golden chances after 25 minutes.

After long spells of dominating, SuperSport broke the deadlock just before the break, as Reneilwe Letsholonyane's fine pass played in Aubrey Modiba, who teed up Thuso Phala to slot into an empty net, 1-0.

Ernst Middendorp opted for a change at the start of the second half, as Sheldon Van Wyk replaced Pogiso Sanoka.

Van Wyk's introduction is just what Maritzburg needed, as the winger carved out a couple chances after 60 minutes, although the SuperSport defence managed to stand firm.

With Maritzburg trailing, Middendorp introduced Bryce Moon for Abia Nale after 75 minute as they searched for a way back in the game.

The Team of Choice pushed a for an equaliser in the closing stages, but were unable to bypass a water-tight SuperSport defence.

Here's how they lined up:

Maritzburg United: 30. Vries, 3. Mogapi, 2. Onyango, 16. Fransman, 6. Moyo, 5. Weidlich, 229. Lentjies, 11. Nale, 19. Rusike, 28. Mekoa , 32. Sanoka.
