High-Flying Maritzburg Sink Polokwane To Move Third

Absa Premiership Report: Maritzburg United v Polokwane City 16 March 2018

By Soccer Laduma - Mar 16, 2018 10:07 PM
Absa Premiership

Result: Maritzburg United 2-1 Polokwane City

Date: 16 March 2018

Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium

Maritzburg United moved up to third spot in the Absa Premiership after registering a 2-1 win over Polokwane City at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Bernard Molekwa’s charges were punished for failing to take an early opportunity  as Pogiso Sanoka got the opener for the hosts in the seventh minute following a goal-mouth scramble.

Mohau Mokate should have doubled the Team of Choice’s lead in the 10th minute after being picked out with a diagonal pass from the right side, but he fluffed his chance.

The tempo of the match slowed down after 35 minutes, which led to a lack of chances from both sides.

Rise and Shine were disjointed throughout the half as the home side took a deserved 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Ramagalela almost equalised for City seven minutes into the second stanza from a tight angle, but his strike was smothered by United shot-stopper Richard Ofori.

Siyanda Xulu was unlucky not to have got the second goal for the Team of Choice on the hour-mark when he headed over the crossbar from six-yards out.

However, Siphesihle Ndlovu extended Maritzburg's lead with 15 minutes remaining as the midfielder latched onto a through-ball before calmly slotting past the on-rushing Chigova.

Rise and Shine managed to pull a goal back in the 87th minute when Sulumba bundled the ball home following an error from goalkeeper Richard Ofori.

That goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Fadlu Davids' charges held on to claim three points.

Here's how they line up:

Maritzburg: 31. Ofori, 2. Onyango, 25. Xulu, 32. Sanoka , 11. Makaringe, 15. Maboe, 8. Ndlovu, 26. Shandu, 28. Mekoa, 9. Fillecia, 22. Mokate.
