Fileccia Nets Late Brace To Send Maritzburg Second
Absa Premiership Report: Maritzburg United v Platinum Stars 23 February 2018
Result: Maritzburg United 2-1 Platinum Stars
Date: 23 February 2018
Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium
Maritzburg United moved up to second spot in the Absa Premiership with a 2-1 win over Platinum Stars thanks to a late brace from Andréa Fileccia.
Norodien grabbed the lead for Stars in the 13th minute with a stunning free-kick from 30-yards out that sailed into the top corner, leaving Richard Ofori with no chance.
Roger De Sa’s troops were lucky not to have conceded a penalty in the 27th minute after defender Gift Sithole appeared to have pushed Fileccia inside the box while they were challenging the ball but the referee dismissed the claims.
Dikwena were very organised defensively and didn’t allow the Team of Choice to get behind their defensive block, which forced the home side to strike long, aimless balls forward.
Deolin Mekoa had a chance to bring Fadlu Davids’ charges level five minutes before half-time with a free-kick but he struck straight into the hands of goalkeeper Dino Visser.
Bandile Shandu was unfortunate not to find the back of the net for the hosts five minutes after the break following a great square pass from Mohau Mokate, but Visser made a point-blank save to keep Dikwena ahead.
Visser made another crucial stop four minutes before the hour mark, denying United’s Mokate at close range after he had powered a low header at the near post.
Visser nearly went from hero to zero two minutes later after he spilled Pogiso Sanoka’s shot that fortuitously hit the upright and fell back into his embrace.
The chances were drying up for the home side with 10 minutes remaining, although they were still probing forward and dominating possession.
Andrea Fileccia eventually leveled matters for United two minutes before time after Visser mistimed the flight of a cross inside the box and it fell kindly for the Belgian forward, who fired a half-volley into a gaping net.
United were awarded a penalty in the final minute of stoppage time when Mokate was brought down amd Fileccia stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to secure victory for the home side.
