Arrows Leave It Late To Sink Maritzburg

Absa Premiership

Result: Maritzburg United 0-2 Golden Arrows
Date: 05 August 2018
Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium
Golden Arrows claimed the spoils in the Kwazulu-Natal derby as they defeated Maritzburg United 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The two sides were not giving each other space to combine passes in the early stages, resulting in a scrappy affair.
The Team of Choice only started to get into their passing rhythm after 20 minutes but they were not dangerous in the final third.
Danny Phiri should have done better for Abafana Bes’thende in the 25th minute with a free-header inside the box but his downward header failed to hit the target.
Evidently the lack of match fitness was still the problem for both sides as after 35 minutes neither of the two teams looked like scoring.
However, the hosts had a decent attacking spell in the last five minutes of the first stanza but they did not do enough as the the two sides went into the break goalless.
Mohau Mokate almost broke the deadlock for the Team of Choice four minutes into the second stanza with a looping header from just outside the box catching Arrows goalkeeper Nkosingiphile Gumede off his line but Gumede made a last ditch backpedaling to make a save.
Fortunate Makaringe had a glorious chance to get the breakthrough for the hosts three minutes before the hour inside the box with acres of space but Gumede made a great save.
Knox Mutizwa eventually broke the deadlock for Abafana Bes’thende 20 minutes before time with a spectacular over-head kick inside the box, 0-1.
United were rushing their moves going forward in numbers with ten minutes to go giving Arrows big chances on counter-attacks.
Siphesihle Ndlovu should have equalised for the Team of Choice five minutes before time with a wonderful chance inside the box but he guided his strike wide.
However, Lerato Lamola sealed the match for Arrows in stoppage time netting on the counter-attack to make it 2-0.
Here's how they lined up:
