Chippa Add To Maritzburg Woes

Absa Premiership

Result: Maritzburg United 0-2 Chippa United

Date: 21 October 2015

Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium

Goals from Aristide Bance and Mark Mayambela added to Maritzburg United’s woes in a frustrating 2-0 loss to Chippa United at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

The Team of Choice showed their intent from the onset, pushing forward in search of an early goal. The Chippa defence was proving difficult to break through, with Ugonna Uzochukwu’s 7th minute effort going well off target.

The hosts were looking promising, but Chippa were settling as the half progressed. Deolin Mekoa tested an alert Daniel Akpeyi in the 36th minute before Ashley Hartog’s effort just missed the target, as United added numbers into their attack with the half-time break looming.

The visitors held on and 0-0 is how the teams headed into the break.

The second stanza started with the Pietermaritzburg side still searching for the opener, and Uzochukwu produced the half’s first shot at goal around the 52nd minute. Two minutes later Mohammed Anas forced a superb fingertip save from Akpeyi to keep the visitors in it after a great period of play from Clive Barker’s men.

The Team of Choice were looking in fine form after the break as Ryan de Jongh also tested Akpeyi in the 64th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to parry the ball away to safety. The hosts were creating more and more chances, but in the 74th minute Aristide Bance silenced the crowd with a clinical finish to put the Chillie Boys 1-0 ahead.

Things got heated as Maritzburg looked to get back into the game and Mario Booysen gave away a free-kick that Mark Mayambela sublimely scored to give Chippa 2-0 lead against the run of play. The home side continued to push for a goal but Chippa managed to hold on for the 2-0 victory.

Here's how they started:

Chippa United: Akpeyi, Okwuosa, Thopola, Mthiyane, Chipeta, Uzochukwu, Cele, R. Manzini, Zuke, Thwala, Bance.

Maritzburg United: Salie, Mkoa D., Zulu, Pantsil, Hartog, Lentjies,Shai, Mngonyama, Onyango, Anas, de Jongh.
