Result: Maritzburg United 1-0 Cape Town City
Date: 30 April 2017
Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium
Cape Town City's Absa Premiership title charge suffered a setback after they lost 1-0 to Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
The Team of Choice enjoyed an encouraging start to the encounter with Mondli Dlamini and Kurt Lentjies seeing a lot of the ball.
Dlamini went close to handing Maritzburg the lead after 21 minutes, as he skipped past his marker before firing just over the crossbar from a tight angle.
City, meanwhile, were finding it tough to get going and were often let down by giving away possession on numerous occasions, most notably in the middle of the park.
That was the trend for the rest of the opening stanza, as the sides went into the break with the score level at 0-0.
Fadlu Davids opted for the first change 10 minutes into the second half as Andrea Fileccia replaced Mohua Mokate.
Chances were hard to come by in the second half, but City went close in the 76th minute through Aubrey Ngoma, but Kwanda Mngonyama produced a timely block to deny the winger from close range.
Maritzburg eventually broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute as Kurt Lentjies curled home a fine free-kick from 25-yards out, 1-0.
Eric Tinkler responded by introducing Letsie Koapeng for Roland Putsche.
City pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but Maritzburg managed to hold out till the final whistle to claim a vital victory.
