Result: Maritzburg United 2-0 AmaZulu
Date: 16 February 2018
Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium
Maritzburg United claimed the spoils in the KwaZulu-Natal derby after defeating AmaZulu 2-0 at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening.
In the first minute, Andrea Fileccia should have opened the scoring for the hosts, but his side-footed shot did not have enough power to beat goalkeeper Siyabonga Mbatha.
Richard Ofori kept the Team of Choice in the game in the 16th minute after tipping Ovidy Karuru’s low strike that was reaching for the bottom corner away from the goals at full-stretch.
Siyethemba Mnguni should have punished United in the 23rd minute after receiving a cross unmarked at the back post but he rushed his shot and it sailed wide of the mark.
With five minutes remaining in the half, Bandile Shandu found the breakthrough with a simple tap in after he was setup by Lebohang Maboe, 1-0.
The hosts ended the half stronger and went into the dressing room with a 1-0 lead.
Usuthu were probing for an equaliser in the opening 15 minutes of the half, but their pressure did not yield anything yet as United stood firm at the back.
Cavin Johnson’s troops were then reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute after Ncube received his second yellow card of the game.
Fadlu Davids’ charges started to sit a little deeper as the second half continued as AmaZulu threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser.
However, Siphesihle Ndlovu sealed the match in the first minute of stoppage time with an easy tap-in following some good work by William Twala down the left flank, 2-0.
