It was the perfect start to the match for the Amakhosi who took the lead eight minutes into the encounter.

Ramahlwe Mphahlele robbed a lacklustre Gaston Sirino of the ball and drove into the Sundowns box before firing into the bottom left-corner from 16-yards out, 1-0.

The Brazilians almost hit back three minutes later when a well-worked free-kick saw Themba Zwane find himself in space four yards out, but his header went inches over the Chiefs goal.

In the 24th minute Sundowns were gifted a golden chance to equalise when a clumsy challenge from Daniel Cardoso on Jeremey Brockie inside the box left the referee with no option but to point to the penalty spot.

Ricardo Nascimento stepped up for the Brazilians and made no mistake to level matters from the spot, 1-1.

The Brazilians came bitterly close to taking the lead in the 38th minute when Brockie met a left-sided free-kick into the box from Lyle Lakay, but the New Zealander’s 16-yard volley struck the crossbar.

The half ended 1-1.

Ten minutes into the second half, Chiefs nearly found their second goal when Siphelele Nthsangase played a beautiful through ball for Khama Billiat who just had Dennis Onyango to beat, but the Sundowns keeper produced a great save from close range to deny him.

Just after the hour mark, Cardoso missed a cross into the Chiefs box which then found Brockie unmarked at the back post, but Itumeleng Khune produced a fantastic save to deny him from a couple of yards out.

Chiefs should have retaken the lead with 20 minutes remaining when Billiat slipped Leonardo Castro through on goal, but he fumbled his shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Both sides played attacking football in the final 20 minutes, but neither could find a winners the match ended all-square.
