Sundowns Move Six Points Clear With Victory Over Arrows
Absa Premiership Report: Mamelodi Sundowns v Golden Arrows, 17 April 2018
Full Time: Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 Golden Arrows
Date: 17 April 2018
Venue: Loftus Versfeld
Mamelodi Sundowns moved six points clear at the top of the Absa Premiership table after beating Golden Arrows 1-0 at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday night.
The Brazilians almost took the lead as early as the second minute when a goalmouth scramble inside the Arrows box fell to Gaston Sirino, but his 16-yard effort struck the post.
Sundowns controlled possession after that and dictated the flow of the game, but the Arrows defence stood firm and kept them at bay for the most part.
Nonetheless, the home team continued to push forward and were rewarded for their efforts in the 23rd minute when the referee awarded them a penalty after Zolani Nkombelo brought Sibusiso Vilakazi down inside the box.
Ricardo Nascimento stepped up for Sundowns and made no mistake from the spot to give his side the lead, 1-0.
In the 38th minute, the Brazilians almost doubled their lead when a swift passing move saw Vilakazi breaking into the box, but he fired inches wide from 14-yards out.
Despite their dominance, Sundowns could not add to their goal tally before the break.
Ten minutes into the second half, the home side created a great scoring chance when Vilakazi played Zwane into space just inside the box, but his 16-yard shot flashed across the face of goal.
Just after the hour mark, Zwane was in the thick of the action again when a great touch from Percy Tau inside the box set him up, but the former was superbly denied from close range by the Arrows keeper.
In the 80th minute, the Arrows keeper was at his best yet again, this time denying Tau’s powerfully struck 16-yard volley with an acrobatic save.
In the end, Sundowns cruised to a rather comfortable 1-0 win and a step closer to the league title
