Date: 14 April 2018
Venue: Loftus Stadium
Mamelodi Sundowns moved six points clear of Orlando Pirates after beating Bidvest Wits 2-0 at the Loftus Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Brazilians were playing some impressive football in the opening exchanges and threatened to get on the scoresheet early on.
Themba Zwane unleashed a pile-driver for Masandawana in the 15th minute from just outside the box but The Clever Boys shot-stopper Darren Keet smothered the fierce strike.
In the 20th minute, Zwane got the opener for the hosts with a strike inside the box following a defence-splitting pass from Percy Tau, 1-0.
Gavin Hunt’s charges upped their tempo after half an hour, noticeably making strong challenges but couldn't yet establish their rhythm going forward.
Sibusiso Vilakazi doubled the lead for the Brazilians in the 35th minute with a clinical strike between the legs of Keet following another pass from Tau, 2-0.
The Tshwane giants held on in the closing minutes of the half to take the 2-0 lead into the dressing room.
Hlompho Kekana had a chance to get the third goal for the hosts 10 minutes into the second stanza with a free-kick from the edge of the box but his strike could not dip in time to find the target.
Thapelo Morena should have made it 3-0 two minutes after the hour mark for the Brazilians after he was sent through one-on-one with Keet but the Clever Boys shot-stopper kept the scoreline respectable.
Pitso Mosimane’s men were more in control of the match with 20 minutes remaining, still keeping a lion’s share of possession and denying the visitors chances.
With nine minutes left, Edwin Gyimah made a goal-saving tackle for Wits to deny a clear-on-goal Morena the chance to slot into an empty net.
The Brazilians could have added more goals in the closing minutes as Wits became vulnerable to counter-attacks, but the tie ultimately ended 2-0 to the home side.
