It was an evenly contested affair in the opening exchanges, although Sundowns looked a bit more threatening in the final.

The Brazilians nearly went ahead in the 17th minute but Percy Tau's free-kick sailed inches over Brandon Petersen's crossbar.

The hosts carved out another opening in the 23rd minute but Khama Billiat blazed over the crossbar from close range.

It was one-way traffic as the half went on but Petersen came to Ajax's resuce after 31 minutes to deny Tau in a one-on-one situation.

The Urban Warriors create a couple chances of their own and went close in the 37th minute when Grant Margeman headed straight at Denis Onyango.

Sundowns pushed for an opening goal in the closing stages of the second half, but Ajax managed to hold out till the halftime whistle.

The home side went agonisingly close to taking the lead in the 50th minute when Hlmopho Kekana rattled the upright from distance.

The Urban Warriors made their first change after the hour mark, as Neo Makua made way for Bantu Mzwakali.

Sundowns eventually broke the deadlock in the 67th minute as Billiat played in Tau, who calmly slotted home at the near post.

The home side doubled their lead in the 74th minute as Anthony Laffor broke into the box, before teeing up Themba Zwane for the tap-in, 2-0.

Pitso Mosimane's charges managed to see out the closing stages to clinch the three points and maintain their title charge.
