An error in defence gifted Stars their first real chance on goal in the 11th minute when a sloppy back pass from Lucky Baloyi was picked up by Ndumiso Mabena, but his 20-yard shot was superbly saved by Itumeleng Khune.

Chiefs first shot on goal only came in the 19th minute when Edmore Chirambadare fired a powerful shot inches wide of the target from the edge of the box.

Two minutes later Stars took the lead, in somewhat controversial circumstances, when a 22-yard shot from Robert N’gambi was adjudged to have crossed the goalline after striking the crossbar and bouncing away from goal.

Television replays showed that the ball had in fact not crossed the goalline, but the referee had already awarded the goal to Stars, 1-0.

Chiefs controlled possession after going behind, but their passing in the final third continuously let them down.

The Amakhosi’s first effort on target only came in the 40th minute when Erick Mathoho met a left-wing cross from Edward Manqele, but his header was well-saved.

The half ended 1-0 in favour of Dikwena.

Chiefs pressed hard at the start of the second half and came close to scoring on the hour mark when Willard Katsande met a corner-kick, but his header went narrowly wide.

In the 72nd minute the Amakhosi made their pressure tell when a low right-wing cross from Erick Mathoho was turned home by Pule Ekstein from ten-yards out, 1-1.

Chiefs threw men forward in the final ten minutes of the game in search of the winner, but the Stars defence held firm as the spoils were shared.
