Kaizer Chiefs' recent struggles in the Soweto Derby continued after they shared the spoils with local rivals Orlando Pirates at the FNB Stadium.

The goalkeeping issue was a major talking point for Chiefs, who opted to hand a debut to Daniel Akpeyi as Virgil Vries was left out completely, while Wayne Sandilands made a surprise return to the Pirates line-up.

The AmaKhosi looked to test Sandilands early as the Buccaneers shot-stopper was forced to parry Bernard Parker's strike from distance after 15 minutes.

Pirates eventually started to dictate the tempo, with Ben Motshwari popping up all over the pitch, although the clear-cut chances were hard to come by.

Willard Katsande's absence was certainly evident in the middle of the park as Pirates were able to cut through middle at will, although Chiefs had the likes of Daniel Cardoso and Teenage Hadebe to thank for silencing the opposing attackers.

Middendorp's troops looked livelier in the second half and they were awarded a penalty six minutes after the break when Khama Billiat was adjudged to have been brought down by Asavela Mbekile.

Pirates responded with a change on the hour mark as Musa Nyatama made way for Augustine Mulenga, who had only registered two league goals this season.

The Buccaneers had struggled with their decision-making for most of the game and they waited until the 71st minute for their first shot on target as Pule's header was saved by Akpeyi.

With 10 minutes to go, Pirates eventually pulled level as Motshwari slipped Lorch through on goal and the forward went on to round Akpeyi to slot into an empty net.

Both sides went in search for the winning goal in the closing stages, but clear-cut openings were hard to come by as the sides had to settle for a share of the spoils on the day.

The Buccaneers have now extended their unbeaten run to 12 matches over Chiefs in across all competitions.
