Red-Hot Moon Fires Chiefs Up To Second
Absa Premiership Report: Kaizer Chiefs v Cape Town City 17 February 2018
Result: Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 Cape Town City
Date: 17 February 2018
Venue: FNB Stadium
Kaizer Chiefs moved up to second spot in the Absa Premiership after defeating Cape Town City 1-0, with Ryan Moon continuing his fine goalscoring form.
The hosts threatened in the early stages of the match through their wing play, but goalkeeper Sage Stephens made a few crucial interceptions.
Lyle Lakay was confident enough in the 13th minute to take a long range strike on his stride but his effort missed slightly wide with goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune seemingly beaten.
Teko Modise almost opened the scoring for the Citizens in the 21st minute with a ferocious half-volley from 20-yards but Khune made a great save at full-stretch.
Siphelele Ntshangase should have done better in the 27th minute after receiving a pass from Joseph Molangoane in the box, but he blazed his effort over the crossbar.
Willard Katsande should have sent Steve Komphela’s charges ahead just before the break with a glorious chance at the back post, but hit the side-netting and the half ended goalless.
Moon took two minutes in the second stanza to break the deadlock after getting in between two defenders to poke the ball beyond Stephens from 12-yards out.
Moon almost got his brace in the 52nd minute after a back-heel pass from Ntshangase but his let-footed curler could not quite find the top corner.
Steve Komphela opted for a change six minutes later as he withdrew Ntshangase for veteran midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala.
Sibusiso Masina should have equalised with 14 minutes remaining but Khune did just enough to take the sting out of his shot, which was eventually cleared off the line by Teenage Hadebe.
Amakhosi still looked dangerous going forward five minutes from time, with Mphahlele looking to combine with Molangoane on the right wing.
Moon should have sealed it in the first minute of stoppage time after an error at the back but Stephens made a great save from point-blank range as the encounter ended 1-0.
