Result: Kaizer Chiefs 0-0 AmaZulu
Date: 17 March 2018
Venue: FNB Stadium
Kaizer Chiefs registered their 12th draw of the Absa Premiership season after playing to a 0-0 stalemate with AmaZulu at the FNB Stadium.
Usuthu started on a high note in the opening five minutes but Zimbabwean forward Ovidy Karuru spurned two successive chances after going clear on goal.
Amakhosi settled after 10 minutes and were looking to penetrate on the right wing, with Ramahlwe Mphahele making overlapping runs.
Steve Komphela's charges increased their intensity after 20 minutes but were yet to find openings in the final third.
Teenage Hadebe almost handed Amakhosi the lead in the 31st minute with a free header that was tipped onto the upright by Usuthu shot-stopper Energy Murambadoro.
Siyethemba Mnguni almost sensationally broke the deadlock for Cavin Johnson’s troops seven minutes before the break with a volley from 25-yards, but it missed narrowly over the corner of the crossbar.
That proved to be the final chance of the half as the sides went into the break scoreless.Komphela did not waste time to ring the changes as he withdrew Wiseman Meyiwa and brought in Hendrick Ekstein at the start of the second half, while Ryan Moon replaced Bernard Parker moments later.
Philani Zulu should have done better for Amakhosi four minutes before the hour after receiving a pass at the far post, but he took too many touches before the chance went away.
Karuru had another opportunity for Johnson’s men two minutes later after being set up inside the box but he fired wide at close range.
In the 64th minute, Moon almost got the breakthrough for the hosts with a header at the near post that sailed just wide of the upright.
Despite the substitutions from both sides, clear-cut chances were hard to come by and they were both restricted to efforts from distance.
Amakhosi’s performance was disjointed altogether and they could not find the winning goal, as Usuthu held on for a vital away point.
