Highlands Finally Claim First Win

Absa Premiership

Result: Highlands Park 2-1 Golden Arrows

Date: 16 September 2018

Venue: Makhulong Stadium

Highlands Park registered their first win of the Absa Premiership season after defeating Golden Arrows 2-1 at the Makhulong Stadium.

Highlands were still searching for their first victory after four matches, as the Lions of the North were hoping to get up and running at the expense of Abafana Besthende.

The first pressure to a breakthrough happened from them, as Lindokuhle Mbatha found his shot blocked for a corner on 21 minutes.

The opener happened though, in unusual circumstances after being awarded a penalty seconds later.

It was left to Mothobi Mvala to do the honours, and the midfielder made no mistake with a cool conversion on 24 minutes.

The home side continued enjoying total domination of the encounter, with Mbatha founding tantamount of space to create a few openings.

On 31 minutes, Mbatha got out wide before drifting at the defence to take a shot from the edge of the area that sailed over the top.

Arrows managed to get out of their shelve, and found space down the middle to break through the defence with Knox Mutizwa applying pressure.

The first chance of the game for them proved telling, as Danny Venter riffled in a stunning free-kick from outside the box after 36 minutes.

Highlands strike again with Mvala completing his brace in just three minutes with a cool finish from inside the box.

Both sides returned unchanged for the second half. Highlands kept piling on the pressure on the visitors.

Despite a few breaks on the counterattack, Arrows looked devoid of ideas to break down a sturdy Highlands back-four.

Highlands had the chance to wrap up the clash when Mbatha found space on the far side and saw his shot hit the upright.

After making a few changes, Arrows brought in a sort of new spring in their offensive play but continued its struggle to break down the hosts.

With a few half-chances propping up in and around the box, the sharpness was not forthcoming from them to salvage at the very least a point from this clash.

In the end, the National First Division champions walked away with the points for their debut win this season that moves them in the top eight.
