The Lions of the North made two changes from their loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in midweek, with Tendai Ndoro and Reneilwe Letsholonyane earning starts, while the Chilli Boys made four alterations, that included Lehlogonolo Masalesa and Lerato Manzini.

After a relatively quiet opening, the hosts broke the deadlock in the 18th minute after a handling error from goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb allowed Spiwe Msimango to fire into an empty following Ndoro's cross.

Owen Da Gama's troops could have been two goals ahead three minutes before the break after Letsholonyane unselfishly setup Peter Shalulile to score into a gaping net after going clear on goal but the goal was ruled out for offside, although replays suggested otherwise.

Norman Mapeza's men came out firing at the start of the second half, but they went two goals down in the 67th minute after Ndoro unleashed a half-volley from range, with the bounce deceiving Tigyemb.

The Chilli Boys had a glorious opportunity to pull a goal back with 15 minutes remaining after William Twala delivered into Chidi Kwem, who was unable to convert from six-yards out.

Despite the late push from the visitors, the Lions of the North were able to hold on for three points as well as the clean sheet to move up to fourth in the standings.
