The game's first real opening arrived after 15 minutes when Lindokhule Mbatha was sent through on goal, but the Highlands winger was unable to score with only Siyabonga Mbatha to beat.

The Usuthu defence were struggling to deal with the Highlands attackers, as the hosts broke through once again in the 26th minute but Phumlani Gumede got back in time to deny Moeketsi Sekola the opening goal.

Cavin Johnson's troops managed to settle thereafter and they carved out their first opening after 30 minutes, with Augustine Ramphela forcing Marlon Heugh into a good save.

Johnson made a change shortly before the break as Mabaliso made way for veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvethe.

Whether the change was forced or tactical, it paid for the visitors as Nomvethe handed Usuthu the lead three minutes into the second half.

Highlands restored parity in the 57th minute as Lindokhule Mbatha made up for his earlier miss by firing past the Usuthu shot-stopper from close range.

However, Usuthu restored their lead with 20 minutes remaining as Bongi Ntuli worked his ways past a couple challenges before setting up Emiliano Tade, who slotted home.

Highlands coach Owen da Gama responded by throwing on former Orlando Pirates winger Mahlatse Makudubela for Luckyboy Mokoena for the final 10 minutes.

In the end, the men from Durban were able to see out the remaining stages of the second half to claim a vital win, although they remain bottom of the log.
