Result: Free State Stars 1-0 SuperSport United
Date: 13 December 2017
Venue: Goble Park
Siphelele Mthembu scored the only goal of the game to hand Free State Stars a 1-0 win over SuperSport United on Wednesday evening.
Stars enjoyed a lot of the ball in the opening exchanges, while Sinthemba Jantjie proved to be a real threat to the SuperSport defence.
Eric Tinkler's charges started seeing more of the ball after 15 minutes, but they could not carve out any clear-cut openings.
The home side eventually broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, after Patrick Phungwayo's hard work down the left flank set-up Mthembu for a tap-in, 1-0.
Five minutes before the break, Reyaad Pieterse produced a stunning save to deny Stars and Mthembu a second goal.
Nevertheless, the home side went into the half time break with the one-goal advantage.
At the start of the second half, Reneilwe Letsholonyane was replaced by Thato Mokeke as SuperSport pushed for an equaliser.
Chances were few and far between for SuperSport throughout the match, although Thuso Phala crossed for Jeremy Brockie, who missed with the goal at his mercy after 65 minutes.
Three minutes later, Stars were reduced to 10 men when Phungwayo was shown a straight red card for a bad challenge.
In the 84th minute, second-half substitute Sifiso Myeni went close to leveling matters but Robert Sangare produced a fine save to deny the winger.
Luc Eymael's charges managed to see out the closing stages of the second half to claim a vital win.
