Polokwane City left themselves facing a final-day fight against the Absa Premiership relegation zone after drawing 1-1 with 10-man Free State Stars at Goble Park on Saturday.
Luc Eymael's charges came into the clash looking to consolidate fifth spot, while also pushing for a return to winning ways.
Rise and Shine knew three points would do them a world of good regarding their survival status after they drew 1-1 with Cape Town City on Wednesday evening.
It was a scrappy affair in the early stages of the half, with both sides struggling to carve out chances in the opening 17 minutes.
Stars started to see a bit more of the ball midway through the first half although their domination counted for nothing as they failed to create openings.
Five minutes into the second half, Stars were reduced to 10 men when Tebogo Potsane was sent off after picking up a second yellow card.
On the hour mark, Stars introduced Thabo Maphakisa while Sammy Seabi came on for the visitors.
Rise and Shine looked to take advantage of the numbers as they went in search of a goal although they struggled to carve out any openings in the box.
Bernard Molekwa's charges did threaten in the final 15 minutes of the half, but Ea Lla Koto had goalkeeper Badra Sangare to thanks for securing them a point.
The result left Polokwane just two points clear of the relegation zone heading into their final game of the season, at home against Chippa United on May 12.
