The hosts enjoyed an encouraging start and they nearly went ahead after nine minutes when Mokhuoane dispossessed Motjeka Madisha, but he dragged his effort from close range.

After a quiet spell, Sundowns nearly broke the deadlock after 22 minutes when Leonardo Castro struck the upright from a tight angle.

Sundowns were then dealt a blow after 28 minutes when Anthony Laffor was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by Percy Tau.

Stars were quite content to sit back and soak up the pressure from the visitors, while Edward Manqele and Siphelele Mthembu showed some good combination play at times.

Sundowns eventually took the lead three minutes before the break when Tau curled home a fine free free-kick from around 20-yards out.

Stars head coach Luc Eymael opted for a change after 53 minutes as Sinethemba Jantjie replaced Manqele.

However, it was Sundowns who doubled their lead seven minutes later when Tau skipped past a challenge before rifling the ball into the top corner from 20-yards out.

Ea Lla Koto responded by introducing Danny Venter in the 66th minute, before Thokozani Sekotlong repalced Castro moments later.

Sundowns continued to dominate as the second half went, while Razak Brimah hardly had a save to make on his league debut.

Mosimane withdrew Oupa Manyisa for Lucky Mohomi on 81 minutes as he wanted see out the rest of the clash without any hassles.

Stars did pull a goal back in stoppage time courtesy of a fine header from Nhlanhla Vilakazi, but Sundowns managed to hold on for the victory.
