Chiefs Snatch Late Winner To Keep Slim Title Hopes Alive

Absa Premiership

Result: Free State Stars 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 04 April 2018

Venue: Goble Park

Kaizer Chiefs struck in the dying moments to snatch a 1-0 win over Free State Stars to keep their slim Absa Premiership title hopes alive.

Stars nearly took the lead inside the opening five minutes when Itumeleng Khune failed to hold on to a cross, but Daniel Cardoso got back to clear an effort off the line.

Chiefs had a chance of their own in the 15th minute as Ryan Moon did well to play in Leonardo Castro, but Sangare raced off his line to thwart the Colombian in the box.

For all of Chiefs' possession, they found it tough to break down the Stars defence and were often restricted to efforts from distance.

Stars remained resolute defensively in the first half, but they very quiet in the opposing third as Khune was rarely tested in the stanza.

That proved to be the trend for the rest of the half as the sides entered the halftime break scoreless.

Ten minutes into the second half, Chiefs nearly went ahead but Badra Sangare produced a superb save to keep out Castro at the far post.

Stars should have broken the deadlock on 67 minutes as an un-marked Tchilimbou headed wide of Khune's upright from close range.

With the introduction of Dumasani Zuma with 20 minutes remaining, Chiefs looked to up the tempo but they were left frustrated by solid Stars backline.

Steve Komphela's men threw everything forward in search of a goal, but they were let down by their decision-making in the final third.

However, Chiefs snatched the winning goal in the final minute of stoppage time thanks to a header from Teenage Hadebe.
