Wits Remain Top Despite Loss To Stars

Bidvest Wits remain top in the Absa Premiership, despite suffering a 3-1 loss to Free State Stars at Goble Park.
Gavin Hunt's charges enjoyed a good start to the match and threatened early on through Phakamani Mahlambi and Mogakolodi Ngele in the opening 10 minutes.
Despite the home side's promising start, it was Stars who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when Makhehlene Makhaula rifled the ball past Moeneeb Josephs from 20-yards out.
Wits looked to hit back three minutes later through Mahlambi, but the winger's header at the far post was cleared away.
The Clever Boys pushed for a way back into the encounter with Mahlambi threatening the most, however the Stars defence managed to hold firm till the halftime break.
Hunt opted for a change at the start of the second half as Sifiso Myeni replaced Ngele.
Wits nearly leveled matters in the 58th minute when Vincent Pule's cross-cum-shot struck the upright with Thela Ngobeni well beaten.
However, Stars doubled their lead in the 65th minute as Mohammed Anas slotted home from close range, after Sifiso Mbhele's strike had hit the post.
Wits did manage to pull a goal back in the 75th minute when Cuthbert Malajila slotted into the far from close range to set up a nervy finish.
The visitors' task was made even tougher three minutes later when Myeni was shown a straight red card.
Wits pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but Stars managed to add a third goal in stoppage time courtesy of a strike from Sinethemba Jantjie.
