Benni's City Down SuperSport In Cape Town

Absa Premiership

Result: Cape Town City 2-0 SuperSport United

Date: 04 August 2018

Venue: Cape Town Stadium

Cape Town City got their Absa Premiership campaign off to a winning start as goals from Roland Putsche and Craig Martin secured a 2-0 win over SuperSport United.

Benni McCarthy handed starts to new signings Siphelele Mthembu, Riyaad Norodien and goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenbergh.
It was an evenly contested affair in the opening 15 minutes of the clash but both sides struggled to create chances in the final third.
Norodien looked lively in the first half for the hosts and went he went close to putting his side ahead after 20 minutes, but his long range effort was thwarted by Ronwen Williams.
Wiliams came to SuperSport's rescue in the 38th minute with a superb save to keep out Norodien's powerful strike from distance.
That proved to be the final chance of the half from both sides as they went into the break scoreless.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Citizens broke the deadlock through Putsche, who sent a superb strike into the top corner from just inside the box.
SuperSport coach Kaitano Tembo responded by introducing Thabo Mnyamane for Evans Rusike just before the hour-mark.
However, it was the hosts who got the next goal as substitute Martin tapped into empty net after Matthew Rusike's initial shot was parried away by Williams.
SuperSport managed to carve out an opening with 10 minutes remaining as Fagrie Lakay broke into the box before firing a low cross to the far post, but James Keene was unable to convert.
In the end, Benni McCarthy's charges managed to see out the remaining minutes to claim the clean sheet and the win.
Here's how they lined up:
