Lehlohonolo Majoro struck a penalty in second-half stoppage time to earn Cape Town City a 1-0 win over Polokwane City on Friday evening,
The Citizens enjoyed most of the possession in the opening exchanges although clear-cut chances were hard to come by.
City did close after 17 minutes from a dead-ball situation, as Ayanda Patosi 's curling effort sailed just wide of the upright.
Polokwane, meanwhile, were quite content to allow City to dictate play, as they looked to attack on the counter.
Benni McCarthy's charges went agonisingly close to taking the lead in the 38th minute. Majoro combined with Thabo Nodada before unleashing a low strike that crashed off the upright.
Nevertheless, the score remained 0-0 as the sides entered the halftime break.
The hosts should have taken the lead after 52 minutes when Mpho Matsi picked out Lyle Lakay, who failed to beat Harold Ndlovu from six-yards out.
Rise and Shine coach Bernard Molekwa opted for a double change after the hour-mark as Jabulani Maluleke and Thabang Klaas.
City squandered another chance in the 67th minute when Majoro failed to beat Ndolvu from point-blank range, after some poor defending by Polokwane.
With the hosts struggling to get the opening goal, McCarthy introduced Nana Akosah-Bempah for Victor Obinna in the 77th minute.
City thought they had the ball in the back of the net in the 88th minute. Majoro was initially flagged offside, despite replays showing him in an onside position. The referee then awarded the goal, before he consulted the linesman and then ruled out the goal for offside.
City were then awarded a penalty in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time when Thapelo Tshilo was adjudged to have handled the box.
Majoro stepped up and slotted home the spot-kick to hand City three points on the night.
