Absa Premiership Report: Cape Town City v Orlando Pirates 28 April 2018
Result Cape Town City 1-0 Orlando Pirates
Date: 28 April 2018
Venue: Cape Town City
Orlando Pirates will have to settle for second spot in the Absa Premiership this season after losing 1-0 to Cape Town City.
The Buccaneers headed into the clash knowing that the top-flight title was not in their hands, and they would need Mamelodi Sundowns to drop points against Ajax Cape Town.
However, with the Brazilians winning 3-1 in Tshwane, even the result against City proved inconsequential in the race for glory.
The Citizens took the game to Pirates in the opening stages as they looked to get the opening goal, but the Pirates defence stood firm.
Masoud Juma went close to giving the hosts the lead after 15 minutes but fired over the crossbar from close range.
However, the home side were rewarded for their perseverance after they took the lead in the 35th minute thanks to a fine strike from Ayanda Patosi.
The Buccaneers, meanwhile, struggling to carve out any clear-cut chances in the remaining stages of the first half.
Bucs came out rejuvenated in the second half as they went in search of an equaliser, but it was City who had a chance to get another goal in the 57th minute but Ralani chose the wrong option on the break and the chance went away.
Pirates opted for a change on the hour mark as Xola Mlambo made way for Mpho Makola as the visitors went in search of an equaliser.
The woodwork then came to City's rescue in the 68th minute as Thabo Qalinge rattled the upright following a corner from Justin Shonga.
In an attempt to maintain the lead, Benni McCarthy threw on defender Kwanda Mngonyama for Ralani with 15 minutes remaining in the half.
Pirates threw everything forward in search of an qualiser but they were unable to take advantage of their chances as City held on for the win.
