Absa Premiership Report: Cape Town City v AmaZulu 15 December 2017
Result: Cape Town City 1-0 AmaZulu
Date: 14 December 2017
Venue: Cape Town Stadium
Cape Town City ended their four-game winless run in the Absa Premiership with a 1-0 victory over AmaZulu at the Cape Town Stadium.
The Citizens got off to a lively start and they nearly went ahead after seven minutes but AmaZulu's Phumlani Gumede produced a superb tackle to deny Sibusiso Masina a clear sight on goal.
Benni McCarthy's charges enjoyed a lot of the possession the opening 20 minutes of the first half, but they were let down by their decision-making in the final third.
It took a while for Usuthu to get going but they should have opened the scoring in the 27th minute. Siduduzo Dlamini managed to break through on goal but he could only fire straight at Sage Stephens from point-blank range.
City had a big chance of their own after 40 minutes when Aubrey Ngoma's free-kick found Roland Putsche, who headed over the crossbar from close range.
Four minutes later, the hosts missed another golden chance as Victor Obinna side-footed wide of the mark from six-yards as the sides went into the break goalless.
Usuthu came out more attacking in the second half as they managed to carve out chances, with the likes of Siyethemba Mnguni and Michael Morton going close in the opening 10 minutes.
With City struggling to create chances, McCarthy introduced Teko Modise for Obinna after 65 minutes.
10 minutes later, Dlamini was presented with another chance to put AmaZulu ahead but he blazed over the crossbar from 10-yards out.
City eventually broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute when Putsche bundled the ball home from close range after Nana Akosah-Bempah and Modise had struck the woodwork, 1-0.
City managed to see out the closing stages of the second half to secure three points, which sees them jump up to second spot.
