Polokwane End Seven-Game Winless Run With Celtic Scalp
Absa Premiership Report: Bloemfontein Celtic v Polokwane City 07 March 2018
Result: Bloemfontein Celtic 0-2 Polokwane City
Date: 07 March 2018
Venue: Dr Molemela Stadium
Polokwane City ended a seven-game winless run in the Absa Premiership by defeating Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 at the Dr Molemela Stadium.
Lucky Baloyi should have done better after he was afforded a lot of space and time in the 10th minute to put Siwelele ahead from just outside the box but his curling effort sailed over the bar.
The two sides struggled to find their rhythm in the first quarter of the match and were both guilty of losing the ball cheaply, which led to a lack of chances.
Bernard Molekwa's charges eventually went ahead in the 30th minute after Thabiso Semenya did well to shrug off his marker inside the box and latch onto Salulani Phiri's through ball in the area before poking the ball beyond Patrick Tignyemb, 0-1.
Veselin Jelusic's troops were unlucky six minutes before the break after the linesman judged Sibusiso Sikhosana's to have crossed the line, much to the disappointment of Tignyemb.
Nevertheless, the score remained 2-0 to the visitors at the half-time break.
Phunya Sele Sele flooded forward early in the second half and Lorenzo Gordinho almost equalised in the 56th minute with a header inside the box, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.
Rise and Shine were reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute when Sikhosana was shown a second yellow card for simulation.
Lantshene Phalane almost pulled a goal back 20 minutes from time for the home side with a fierce left-footed strike from range that skimmed past the top of the crossbar.
The hosts dominated the opening exchanges in search of a first goal, but the Rise and Shine defence remained resolute to claim three points and a clean sheet.
Here's how they lined up:
Celtic: 30. Tignyemb, 3. Pfumbidzai, 22. Rikhotso, 17. Mabasa (Motshegwa 49'), 50. Masuku, 2. Molekwane (Jembula 74'), 25. Gordinho, 35. Baloyi, 8. Phalane, 10. Mabena, 7. Hotto.
