Bloemfontein Celtic got their 2018 off to a superb start with a 2-1 win over Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership match at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The first chance on goal came in the seventh minute when Dean Hotto got behind the Arrows defence, but he was thwarted by goalkeeper Nkosingiphile Gumede.
In the 16th minute the Celtic defence went to sleep when Lerato Lamola broke through on goal, but with just the keeper to beat the Arrows man saw his shot stopped.
Celtic took the lead in the 28th minute after a mistake by goalkeeper Gumede saw him spill a cross into the path of Victor Letsoalo and he tapped the ball into the net, 1-0.
Phunya Sele Sele continued to press forward and scored their second goal in first half injury time when Hotto fired the ball into the corner of the net from 16-yards out on the left side, 2-0.
The second half saw Arrows pushing forward and they were rewarded for their efforts in the 69th minute when substitute Thomas Chideu pulled a goal-back to make for an exciting final 20 minutes, 2-1.
Danny Venter came close to levelling matters ten minutes later when he unleashed a thunderbolt from long range, but his effort sailed inches wide of the target.
Arrows continued to press hard for an equaliser in the dying minutes of the match, but the Celtic defence stood firm to hold on for the win.
