Celtic End Six-Game Winless Run With Victory Over Ajax
Absa Premiership Report: Bloemfontein Celtic v Ajax Cape Town, 04 March 2018
Full Time: Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 Ajax Cape Town
Date: 04 March 2018
Venue: Dr Molemela Stadium
Bloemfontein Celtic ended their six-game winless run in the Absa Premiership with a 1-0 win over Ajax Cape Town at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Celtic started the better of the two teams, with Deon Hotto bursting into the box in the fifth minute, but he was superbly denied in a one-on-one situation with the Ajax goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.
The next decent effort on goal only came in the 20th minute when Ajax’s Krahire Zakri got onto the end of a pin-point cross, but his header went just over the target.
Petersen was at his best again for the Urban Warriors just after the half-hour mark with a fantastic close-range stop to deny Celtic’s Ndumiso Mabena, who saw his effort come off the keeper and hit the underside of the crossbar before being cleared.
Neither team could break the deadlock before the break and entered the half-time tunnel with the score locked at 0-0.
Seven minutes into the second half, Celtic took the lead when a defensive blunder by Ajax gifted Ronald Pfumbidzai the ball in space just inside the box and he made no mistake with a clinical finish, 1-0.
In the 65th minute, Ajax nearly equalised when Mosa Lebusa met a good cross into the box, but he saw his header go centimeters wide of the post from 10-yards out.
Ajax pushed forward in the dying minutes of the match and came close to leveling matters two minutes from time when another fine cross into the box was met by Mario Booysen, but his headed effort also went wide.
In the end, Celtic managed to hold on for a vital 1-0 win.
