Bucs Suffer First Defeat Of The Season

Absa Premiership Report: Bidvest Wits v Orlando Pirates 23 September 2017

By Soccer Laduma - Sep 23, 2017 07:54 PM
Absa Premiership

Result: Bidvest Wits 1-0 Orlando Pirates

Date: 23 September 2017

Venue: Bidvest Stadium

Orlando Pirates missed the chance to move top after they lost 1-0 to Bidvest Wits on Saturday evening.

Wits broke the deadlock in the five minute as Gerald Phiri Jnr got on the end of a set-piece, controlled well and fired into the bottom corner.

Pirates nearly leveled mattes moments later, as Thabo Qalinge turned brilliantly before seeing his shot crash off the crossbar.

Gavin Hunt's charges continued to threaten as the half went and looked to James Keene and Amr Gamal as the Buccaneers looked shaky in the opening 30 minutes.

Reeve Frosler nearly handed his side a second goal in the 35th minute but his long-range effort sailed just wide of the upright.

Wits goalkeeper Moneeb Josephs ensured Wits went into the break with a clean sheet as he did well to deny Thabo Matlaba from close range.

The Buccaneers opted for a change in the 51st minutes as the young Lyle Foster made way for Thabiso Kutumela.

With the visitors struggling to create chances, Mpho Makola and Bernard Morrison were introduced after 65 minutes.

Makola went close to handing Pirates an equaliser in the 70th minute but Moeneeb Josephs produced a good save to deny the midfielder.

Wits were pushed back in the final 15 minutes of the stanza, with Pirates pushing for the equaliser.

However, Milutin Sredojevic's charges failed to carve out another chance and were handed their first defeat of the season.

Here's how they lined up:

Wits: 16. Josephs, 4. Khumalo, 5.Damionovic, 6. Monare, 10. Gamal, 13. Hlanti, 21. Phiri, 26. Keene, 30. Motshwari, 33. Frosler, 41. Ntshangase.

Pirates: 30. Sandilands, 4. Jele, 34. Nyauza, 21. Maela, 28. Dube, 11. Matlaba, 14. Nyatama, 21. Qalinge, 3. Lorch, 20. Foster, 31. Gabuza.

A very disappointing game for us, we allowed Wits to score first and defended the lead for the entire game. A replica of last season, meaning we didn't learn anything from losing all last season games from Wits. The applied the same strategy against us as last season, a point of calamity as we are a work in progress. We can't win all games but at the same breath we can't lose games the same way we did last season to the same teams. If we don't revisit last season's videos then I won't be surprised if Pretoria teams perpetuate from were they left last season, that's embarrassing us again. It's too early to panic as we still have time to regroup, because there's always a room for improvement

I'm a pirates fan, I love ibhakajuju but I'm very disappointed in GABUZA's form. last season when NDORO was still at pirates it was very hard for GABUZA to get a jersey nd when he did he would use that opportunity. look now NDORO is gone nd instead of using that opportunity uyabhacaza. if prates can buy a new striker here comes GABUZA fighting for a jersey. WE REALY NEED GOOD FINISHERS MYBE (2) JUST TO COMPETE. PIRATES can do better without MAKOLA, JELE and GABUZA. to my coach and his tech team ngingathi nje "SO FAR SO GOOD"

Wits is one of the weakest teams in the PSL right now, my beloved Bucs failed to beat what a poor performance, they have at least played a draw instead of losing, I'm a team like Baroka fc or Arrows would have gone for a straight win against Wits,Bucs can't win three games in a row, poor form nothing has changed WWDDWWDDWWLL
