Resurgent Wits Snatch Victory Against In-Form Maritzburg

Absa Premiership
Result: Bidvest Wits 2-1 Maritzburg United
Date: 03 April 2018
Venue: Bidvest Stadium
Bidvest Wits continued their resurgent run in the Absa Premiership with a 2-1 win over in-form Maritzburg United at the Bidvest Stadium.
Elias Pelembe nearly opened the scoring for the Clever Boys in the eighth minute with a thumping strike from just outside the box but United goalkeeper Richard Ofori made a good stop.
Keegan Ritchie eventually grabbed the opener for Gavin Hunt’s troops after 16 with a spectacular free-kick that sailed into the top corner.
In the 34th minute, Lehlohonolo Majoro nearly doubled the Clever Boys’ lead from an acute angle but Ofori parried his strike away for a corner.
United shot-stopper Ofori kept his side in the match six minutes before the break with a point-blank save to deny Pelembe, as Hunt’s men took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
After a quiet start to the second stanza, Hunt made his first change four minutes before the hour by withdrawing James Keene for Vincent Pule.
The Clever Boys were working their way on the wings and sending dangerous crosses into the area, but the Team of Choice remained resolute.
United got the equaliser 11 minutes before time through Mohau Mokate, who netted from close range following a cross into the box, 1-1.
However, Buhlebuyeza Mkhwanazi gave the home side a 2-1 lead five minutes before time with a powerful header inside the box.
Hunt’s men kept their shape defensively and stayed compact to preserve their lead and clinch all the three points.
