Date: 1 March 2014
Venue: Bidvest Wits
Goals from Sthembiso Ngcobo, Matthew Booth and Calvin Kadi saw Bidvest Wits come from a goal behind to beat Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 in an Absa Premiership match at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night.
The opening 45 minutes saw Sundowns start like a house on fire after they opened the scoring in the fifth minute.
Some poor defending from Booth saw him unable to clear a Teko Modise cross and Dove Wome was quickest to pounce, poking the ball home from close range to give the Brazilians the lead, 1-0.
Eight minutes later Rodney Ramagalela let loose with a powerful shot from distance, but Moneeb Josephs was on hand to make a good stop.
After that, however, Wits started to find their feet and began mounting a comeback.
In the 27th minute Wits were able to pull a goal back when Ngcobo met a pin-point cross from Tebogo Moerane at the back post and the former Chiefs man slotted home with ease, 1-1.
Sibusiso Vilakazi nearly gave Wits the lead in the 33rd minute when his shot from just outside the box beat the keeper, but skimmed the wrong side of the crossbar.
Three minutes later and Ramagalela thought he had restored Sundowns’ lead when he headed the ball home, but he was adjudged off-sides.
The second half saw the home side take the game by the scruff of the neck which resulted in the Clever Boys taking the lead seven minutes after the restart.
Vilakazi whipped in a dangerous corner that was met by Ngcobo, the striker heading the ball back into the danger area where Booth was on hand to head home from a couple of yards out, 2-1.
Wits confirmed their dominance of the game in the 65th minute when Kadi superbly volleyed home a Ngocbo cross, 3-1.
Gavin Hunt’s men shut up shop after that and held on for a crucial win that sees them go level on points with Mamelodi Sundowns on the league table.
