The Clever Boys came into the clash looking for a return to winning ways in the league, after they drew 1-1 with Mamelodi Sundowns in their last encounter.

Wits did see a lot of the ball for most of the first half, but they were unable to carve out any chances to trouble Highlands goal in the opening 20 minutes.

The hosts, however, should have taken the lead on 26 minutes when Simon Murray's knockdown found Mxolisi Macuphu, who could only hit the upright from six-yards out.

Wits were not to be denied six minutes before the halftime break when Thulani Hlatshwayo met a free-kick from Keagan Ritchie and powered home a header into the far corner.

Highlands should leveled matters ten minutes into the second when the ball fell kindly to Moeketsi Sekola, who dragged his effort wide of the upright with only Darren Keet to beat.

The Lions of the North continued to press for an equalising goal as the second half went on, but the Wits defence were resolute and thwarted them at every attempt.

Sphiwe Mahlangu had a great chance to pull Highlands level in the 90th minute, but the substitute skewed his volley horribly wide of the mark with only Keet to beat.

In the end, 1-0 was how the score remained as Gavin Hunt's men have now taken a commanding lead over second-place Orlando Pirates, who face Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon.
